Papers, 1850-1941.

Principally letters between Hoyle, his wife, and various members of the family from 1858 to 1864, with a dozen or so letters belonging to Sarah Hallman (probably a descendant). Before the war, Hoyle was a school teacher, and there are several lectures and letters pertaining to this period of his life. He also received some descriptive letters from a friend attending Rutherford Academy. During the war, Hoyle was a first lieutenant in the 55th N.C. Infantry Regiment (Davis's Brigade, Heth's Division), and he served with that regiment in N.C., Va., and Pa. His letters of army life are quite detailed, giving a good account of the various campaigns and of army life in general. The letters to Hoyle from his wife provide some information on social and economic life in the Confederacy.
